We are a period-instrument based collective. We are musically open-minded, meaning we don’t restrict ourselves to one point in time or genre, but we play music that we love and find a curiosity about. We refer to these curiosities as little things in odd shapes.

Music for the people

We’re of the opinion that music is in everyone and for everyone. So we don’t just play in concert venues, but we try and play in different places – homes, pubs, restaurants, parks, streets, tunnels…Our performances often take the audiences on a little travel, exploring historical and narrative thread linking familiar and lesser-known repertoire. Although sometimes we combine styles, often we will appear in one of four shapes:

Its individual members perform internationally with prestigious ensembles including the the English Baroque Soloists/Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Academy of Ancient Music, Europa Galante, Concerto Italiano, Philharmonia Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra.

Our collective allows for flexible and diverse programme combinations, with a core chamber ensemble expanding to a full-scale orchestral setup when required.

Since its formation in 2016, the ensemble has performed Baroque, Classical and Romantic programmes in a range of venues in the UK and abroad, including the St Stephen’s Festival of the Arts in London and Classica Aurora series in Arezzo (Italy), and has recently been selected for the Brighton Early Music Festival Live! Scheme.

Istante is ensemble in residence at Heath Street Baptist Church, Hampstead where two of it’s members direct Baroquestock, a feastival of early-ish music and home-cooked food.
